Winners of the mobile challenge

I launched a contest on the 1st of July in Europe with the support of the European marketing team: the Adobe Mobile Challenge. To participate, you had to build a great AIR application and publish it on the three market places (Android Market, Apple Store and BlackBerry AppWorld) before the 1st of September. I received 50 submissions. Exchanging by email with all the participants during the summer was great. The community  has so many great ideas and ambitions! I also learnt a lot about your constraints, your expectations and your experiments regarding our mobile story and the different workflows to submit your AIR apps on the three market places. It was a great adventure, and hopefully, we’ll repeat this experience next year.

Here is the list of the winners (you can check the Adobe Mobile Challenge website too: http://www.adobemobilechallenge.com/winnersbeta/). All these applications are Adobe AIR apps available on Android, iOS and the PlayBook.

First Prize – Best mobile application

The members of the jury reviewed the applications of different devices over the week-end. The first prize is a ticket to Los Angeles. The author of the application will attend Adobe MAX with the Adobe Evangelists. Then, the four best applications win a Creative Suite 5.5 Web Premium for exceptional achievements. We also wanted to rewarded the best 12 applications that were following the top 5, giving away Flash Builder 4.5 licenses. Drum roll…

okoCheck by Alexander Renner and co.

The author of this application wins a ticket to Adobe MAX in Los Angeles !!! It’s a very innovative educational application. The technological progress of mankind has always been measured on the nature of his tools . Whole ages were baptized as Stone-, Bronze- and Iron Age – first of all because of the resources used therein. What title would you give todays era? Surely it wouldn’t be easy to find a clear answer to that question.  But it is almost certain that resources are getting scarcer and that the consumer is forced to handle these resources more gently. This trend can already be seen, in the large number of products made from recycled resources.  The app “ÖkoCheck Papier” should help to sensitize the user for his environment and his handling of daily goods.

All the members of the jury were touched by this application for several reasons: the topic, a disruptive UI, very smart use of the tablet devices combined with real paper (augmented reality), neat design.

TOUCH N CLASH by Neue Digitale / Razorfish GmbH

What a fun and innovative game ! The best part is that you can use different devices to play this multiplayer game: Android vs iPhone vs iPad vs PlayBook. It just works.

TOUCH N CLASH is a crossplatform multiplayer game for two up to four players.  The goal is to get the other players out of the game by using a gameball, which works like a bomb. The last player in the game wins.  You will need Wi-Fi internet connection to find other players. All players have to be connected to the same Wi-Fi network.  Gameplay:  In the game the colored sides of your gamefield represent the other players. If a gameball appears in your gamefield, you have to pass it to an other player before the countdown time runs out.  To pass a gameball to an other player, touch a gameball and drag it to the colored side of your gamefield.  Randomly you have the possibility to get an additional gameball. A transparent gameball will appear in the middle of your gamefield, touch it to activate it.  Keep your gamefield clean of gameballs.

APOLLINE & LEON by Avant-Gout

Apolline & Leon in as interactive book on Smartphones and Touchpads for Apple, Android and Blackberry Playbook. Ideal for young children from 3, the app combines the pleasure of reading and playing.  Apolline and Leon are curious, brave and endearing.  They are intrigued by an old woman who looks like a witch.  They decide to secretly follow her… The application is available in 9 languages. The members of the jury were impressed by the interactive animations but also by the sound design. Some members of the jury directly tested the application on their children. The didn’t want to give them back the tablets which slow down the reviewing process as you can guess.

ENLARGE YOUR PANTS by Jerome Birembaut

Crazy casual game!!! Amazing performance on the three platforms. The developer optimized a lot the source code and that’s blazing fast. Your objective in this jumping game is to keep your bear bouncing through the beach for as long as possible.  The game starts when you pull and release the characters’ pants.  The more you pull, the faster he will go. Tap the screen when you find a suitable pull on your bear’s pants.  You can score bonuses by landing on SUPER or HELPER bears (see the in-game instructions).  There are also characters with special abilities.

BLACKOUT  by Wim Van Buynder

First, it’s a very cool idea. The design is also very nice. BlackOut is a memory game without built-in themes and cards to play with. It’s up to the player to first search online for random pictures based on a keyword. After that time starts ticking, cards popup… the game has started. High scores are tracked globally per difficulty-level, and Twitter is integrated so you can inform the world about the theme you played. It’s also possible to beat other ones scores and send them a tweet afterwards. It’s a social memory brain training game. For those with no Twitter account: you can play it also in single player mode, and scores will be saved locally on the device.

“It’s a classic, but with the user as a source for the choice of publicly available pictures it’s good fun – like the Twitter Integration!”
“Classical memory game, but with a twist. You get to choose the theme you want to play and then promote your score on Twitter.”
“I like the fact that it takes random pictures on the web.”
