Flex dashboards at JAX2010

Last Tuesday, at JAX2010 in Germany, I’ve presented how to build interactive dashboards using Java and Flex. When you gather the power of Java and mashup and expose data, with the power of Flex to express the data using advanced visualization components, you can definitely develop first-class dashboard in a minute. Leveraging the new Data-Services wizards of Flash Builder 4, and the Remoting features of BlazeDS, you can easily transform raw data into significant information on a screen, improving decision making of your final users. Here are the slides I’ve presented during this one hour workshop:

I also wanted to highlight the real-time skills of the Adobe Flash Platform, to develop the next generation of interactive and collaborative dashboard. I’ve been able to synchronize a dashboard launching two instances of the application, the first one on my laptop, and the second one on my Nexus One phone (with Flash Player 10.1 installed). You can watch here James Ward presenting the Tour de Flex dashboard on his mobile, with live data pushed by a Java server: http://www.jamesward.com/2010/02/17/flex-apps-on-mobile-devices/

As always, as I was facing Java developers, I wanted to run a quick demo starting from scratch. I’ve just recorded again in a quiet place my demo, and here is the result. You’ll see how in less than 10 minutes I consume datasets coming from Java, and express them building an interactive dashboard with Flex components. I also use in my demo the Gauge component which is part of the IBM ILOG Elixir suite (http://www.ibm.com/developerworks/websphere/zones/visualization/demos/elixir.html).
